History :-

General Surgery department started in 1963 at Wanless Hospital,Miraj. In 1972 Two units of General Surgery started at Govt. Hospital,Sangli. Up to 1987 Orthopaedics, ENT & Anaesthesia departments were under Dept. of Surgery.Up to 2004 dept. of surgery work done at three places viz. Wanless Hospital,Miraj, Govt. Medical College & Hospital,Miraj & Govt. Hospital,Sangli. In 2004 Wanless Hospital,Miraj delinked from G.M.C.Miraj & Department splits at Two places Govt. Medical College & Hospital,Miraj & Govt. Hospital,Sangli. At present Two units are working at Govt. Medical College & Hospital,Miraj & Two units are working at Govt. Hospital,Sangli. At present Department of General Surgery is fulfilled with One Professor,Four Associate Professor, Seven Assistant Professor &  Six Post-Graduate admissions per year.

Average Bed occupancy is 102% in each wards.

Department Library  constitutes 250+ books/ journal apart from Central Library.

Apart from Gen.Surgery work we have lot of Oncosurgical, Paediatric Surgical, Laparoscopic, Urosurgical work.
